What is White Balance in Photography?

Have you ever taken a photo that looked too orange or too blue, and you couldn’t figure out why it didn’t match what your eyes saw? That’s where white balance comes in. It’s a simple but transformative concept in photography that can elevate your images from “meh” to magical. And the best part? You don’t need to be a tech wizard to master it. Whether you’re using Lightroom Mobile or Lightroom Classic, learning to control white balance will help you create photos you’re proud to share.

What is White Balance?

White balance adjusts the colors in your photo to make them look more natural.

Light comes in different temperatures—measured in Kelvin—and your camera tries to balance those temperatures so that whites actually look white (instead of yellow or blue).

Here’s a quick breakdown of light temperatures:

  • Warm light (sunset, candlelight) leans toward yellows and oranges.
  • Cool light (overcast skies, shadows) has more blues.
  • Neutral light (midday sunlight) is typically balanced and doesn’t add much color cast.

By adjusting white balance, you can either correct colors to make them look true to life or tweak them for a creative effect.

Why Does White Balance Matter?

White balance isn’t just about fixing colors—it’s about setting the mood of your photo.

A warm tone can make a sunset feel golden and inviting, while cool tones can give a blue hour photo a serene, dreamy vibe.

Understanding how to adjust white balance helps you tell the story you want through your images.

When to Adjust White Balance

Increase Warmth

  • Golden Hour: Enhance the dreamy, golden glow during the hour after sunrise or before sunset by increasing warmth.
  • Sunset/Sunrise: Make those fiery reds, oranges, and yellows pop to emphasize the magic of the moment.
  • Cozy Indoor Scenes: Use warm tones to create a sense of comfort and intimacy in candlelit or lamp-lit settings.

Increase Cool Tones

  • Blue Hour: Accentuate the calm, ethereal feel of the hour just after sunset or before sunrise by adding cool tones.
  • Snowy Landscapes: Highlight the crisp, fresh feeling of a winter scene with cooler whites and blues.
  • Urban Nightscapes: Give cityscapes with artificial lights a sleek, modern vibe by leaning into cool tones.

How to Adjust White Balance in Lightroom

In Lightroom Mobile

  1. Open your photo in the editing module.
  2. Tap on Color and look for the Temp (temperature) slider.
    • Move the slider to the right (yellow) to warm up the photo.
    • Move it to the left (blue) to cool it down.
  3. Play with the Tint slider to fine-tune the balance between greens and magentas for natural skin tones.

In Lightroom Classic

  1. Open your photo in the Develop module.
  2. Locate the White Balance section in the Basic panel.
  3. Choose a preset (Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten) or manually adjust the sliders:
    • Temp: Adjust warmth (yellow) or coolness (blue).
    • Tint: Balance magenta and green tones.
  4. Use the White Balance Eyedropper tool to click on something neutral (like white or gray) in your photo for automatic correction.
