What Is ISO in Photography?
A Guide to Light Sensitivity and Creativity
ISO is one of the three pillars of photography, alongside shutter speed and aperture, that controls the exposure of an image. It measures your camera sensor’s or film’s sensitivity to light, playing a crucial role in how your photos look, especially in challenging lighting conditions. Understanding ISO allows you to adjust your camera for the best results, whether you’re shooting in bright sunlight or low light.
A Brief History of ISO and Film Speed
ISO has its roots in film photography, where it was known as ASA or DIN, depending on the standard used. Film speed referred to how sensitive a roll of film was to light, and photographers chose film based on their shooting conditions:
- Low-speed film (ISO 50-400): Preferred for bright conditions or studio work, known for producing fine detail and minimal grain.
- High-speed film (ISO 800-3200+): Used for low-light or fast-action photography, but resulted in noticeable grain.
In digital photography, ISO works similarly, though it refers to the sensitivity of the camera’s sensor rather than physical film. Unlike film, digital ISO can be adjusted for each shot, providing greater flexibility.
How ISO Works in Digital Photography
Low ISO (e.g., ISO 100):
The sensor is less sensitive to light, requiring more light to properly expose the image. This results in smoother, cleaner images with minimal noise.
High ISO (e.g., ISO 1600+):
The sensor becomes more sensitive to light, making it easier to shoot in dim conditions. However, this increases noise (graininess) and reduces image quality.
What is considered “high ISO” depends on the camera sensor. Newer or larger sensors (such as full-frame or medium format) can handle higher ISOs with less noise, while smaller sensors (like those in smartphones or entry-level cameras) may show significant noise at lower ISO values.
Using a Low ISO: Advantages, Disadvantages, and When to Use It
Advantages of Using a Low ISO
- Sharper Images: Low ISO minimizes digital noise, resulting in crisp, clean photos.
- Greater Detail: Especially important for landscapes and portraits where fine detail matters.
- Better Color Accuracy: Low ISO ensures richer, more accurate colors with smooth gradients.
When to Use Low ISO:
- Bright daylight or well-lit scenes.
- When using a tripod for long exposures (e.g., landscapes, astrophotography).

- Longer Exposure Times: Low ISO requires more light, which can lead to motion blur if the shutter speed is too slow.

Advantages of Using a High ISO
- Better Low-Light Performance: High ISO allows you to shoot in darker conditions without needing additional light.
- Faster Shutter Speeds: Useful for freezing motion in low light, such as indoor sports or concerts.
- Increased Flexibility: Great for handheld shooting in dim environments, eliminating the need for a tripod.
When to Use High ISO:
- Indoor or nighttime photography without a flash.
- Fast-moving subjects in low light, like wildlife or sports.
Disadvantages of Using a High ISO
- Increased Noise: High ISO introduces digital noise, which can reduce the sharpness and clarity of your image.
- Reduced Dynamic Range: High ISO can cause highlights to blow out and shadows to lose detail.
- Potential Loss of Color Quality: Colors may appear washed out or less vibrant.
How to Balance ISO with Other Settings
To achieve the best exposure and image quality, ISO should be adjusted in harmony with shutter speed and aperture:
- Start with the lowest ISO possible for your lighting conditions.
- Increase ISO only when necessary to maintain proper exposure or achieve the desired shutter speed or depth of field.
Modern cameras, especially mirrorless and DSLRs, perform better at high ISOs than older models. Post-processing software like Adobe Lightroom can also help reduce noise in high-ISO images.
Using Auto ISO
I use Auto ISO on my Sony mirrorless cameras to adapt to changing light conditions while keeping image quality high. To control noise, I set a maximum ISO of 6400, ensuring a balance between brightness and minimal grain.
How to Set a Maximum ISO in Auto ISO Mode on Sony A7IV & A7RV
On the Sony A7IV:
- Press the Menu button.
- Navigate to Exposure/Color → ISO Sensitivity Settings.
- Select ISO AUTO and set the ISO Range Limit.
- Adjust Maximum ISO to 6400.
On the Sony A7RV:
- Press the Menu button.
- Go to Exposure/Color → ISO Settings.
- Choose ISO AUTO and then set the Maximum ISO to 6400.
- Confirm and exit the menu.
This setup helps me shoot efficiently in varying lighting without constantly adjusting ISO manually.
When ISO Becomes Creative
ISO isn’t just a technical setting—it’s a creative tool. Embracing noise at high ISO can add character to your photos, mimicking the grain of classic high-speed film. On the other hand, low ISO delivers pristine quality, perfect for showcasing fine details.
