The Sony 20-70mm f/4 Camera Lens…. small but mighty!

When Sony announced the 20-70mm f/4 lens, I was cautiously excited. The price point was half of the 24-70 f/2.8 model, and I knew it would be significantly lighter. Also those extra 4mm in wider shots could be helpful!

And you may know this already, but I acquire my photography gear all over. This lens came out in March 2023 and I didn’t have a ton of time to get it shipped, but I knew I wanted it for my trip to Southern California. Instead I called over to George’s Camera in San Diego to request a hold and then picked it up on my way from the airport to the hotel. Since I don’t live in a big city, sometimes it’s just easier to grab my gear while traveling!

Sony 20-70mm Advantages

Travel Friendly

First of all, this camera lens is wide enough for travel photography that I don’t need to bring my Sony 16-35mm f/2.8. That’s a huge win over the 24-70 f/2.8 for a broader field of view. While I use the 16-35 for all my vacation rental / real estate photos, I don’t love to travel with it.

Versatile Focal Range

The 20-70mm focal length is an amazing range for a variety of subjects without frequently changing lenses.

For sunrises, coastal, and landscape photography, this focal range really fits my needs while traveling.

On the zoom end, the 70mm is a great focal length for a short telephoto lens.

Sony 20-70mm Disadvantages

The only real disadvantage here is the f/4 aperture. While that makes the lens lighter and cost less, it also means it’s not as good in low light and depth of field control.

Overall thoughts

  • The Sony 20-70mm f/4 is a great size – and super light. Exactly what was missing from my travel bag.

For all landscape and travel photography needs where I’m using an f/4 aperture or higher, this will definitely be a staple in my camera bag.
