Choosing the Right Lens for Different Types of Photography

Selecting the right lens can transform your photography. 

Each type of photography demands a specific type of lens to optimize the image quality and desired effects, whether it’s capturing the serene expanses of landscapes or the intimate details of a portrait. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right lens for different types of photography, ensuring that you capture your vision perfectly.

Portrait Photography

Lens Characteristics

• Focal Length: Typically 50mm to 85mm. These lengths are favored for their ability to produce natural-looking proportions and compress features slightly, which is flattering for close-ups.
• Aperture: Wide apertures (f/1.2 to f/2.8) are ideal to achieve a shallow depth of field, blurring the background and focusing attention on the subject.

Recommended Lenses

• 85mm f/1.8: Perfect for headshots and studio portraits.
• 50mm f/1.4: Offers a more versatile frame for environmental portraits.
• 135mm f/1.8: Excellent for tighter, more intimate portraits without getting too close to the subject, ensuring superb background compression and isolation.
• 35mm f/1.4: Great for more dynamic portraits that include the environment, suitable for storytelling or lifestyle shots.

Landscape Photography

Lens Characteristics:

• Focal Length: Wide-angle lenses (14mm to 35mm) are preferred for their capacity to capture expansive scenes without distorting the horizon.
• Aperture: Smaller apertures (f/8 to f/16) ensure everything from the foreground to the horizon is in sharp focus.

Recommended Lenses:

• 16-35mm f/4: Excellent for capturing wide landscapes.
  • Both my Canon, and now my Sony, have been my workhorse lenses. I use a f/2.8 version but the f/4 is less expensive.
• 24mm f/1.4: Allows for dramatic landscapes, even in low light.

Sports Photography

Lens Characteristics:

• Focal Length: Longer lenses (70mm to 200mm) are crucial to capture distant action closely.
• Aperture: Fast apertures (f/2.8 or faster) help freeze the action and perform well under stadium lighting.

Recommended Lenses:

• 70-200mm f/2.8: A versatile zoom that covers most sports events from a reasonable distance.
• 300mm f/2.8: Ideal for field sports, allowing you to get close to the action while maintaining a safe distance.

Macro Photography

Lens Characteristics:

• Focal Length: Short to medium telephoto lenses (60mm to 105mm) are commonly used for their ability to magnify small subjects and easier handling.
• Aperture: Depends on the subject and desired depth of field; f/8 to f/16 provides a balance between sharpness and detail.

Recommended Lenses:

• 100mm f/2.8 Macro: Provides 1:1 magnification, ideal for capturing detailed shots of insects, flowers, and small objects.
• 60mm f/2.8 Macro: Suitable for subjects that don’t require you to maintain a distance, like product photography.
