Visiting Coral World Ocean Park in St. Thomas with small children is an adventure in itself, and bringing more than an iPhone isn’t practical. Instead, I relied entirely on my iPhone 15 Pro Max—and I’m glad I did.

1. The Undersea Observatory Tower: A Window Into the Ocean

One of the most unique spots at Coral World is the Undersea Observatory Tower. Unlike an aquarium, where you’re looking into a tank, this tower allows you to step below sea level and see marine life in the wild.

• What I Captured: Schools of fish and the mesmerizing blues of the ocean from the large viewing windows.
• Best iPhone Tips:
  • Use Night Mode to brighten up the dim underwater scenes.
  • Press and hold the screen to lock focus on a subject (like a fish swimming by).
  • Angle your phone slightly to reduce reflections from the glass.
  • Try video mode in 4K to capture the gentle motion of the sea creatures.

Everyone was fascinated watching the fish dart by, and I loved how effortless it was to photograph the moment without missing it myself.

2. The Sea Turtles: A Photographer’s Dream Subject

If you only take one photo at Coral World, make it the sea turtles. These massive, endangered green sea turtles are absolutely breathtaking up close. I’ve seen rescue turtles in tubs back home in Surf City, North Carolina, at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, but this was a really cool way to see them in a more natural environment. Watching them glide through the water, so graceful and strong, was an unforgettable experience.

This was, hands down, one of the most memorable experiences for me as both a photographer and an ocean enthusiast—plus, it was fun to see the little ones around me experiencing it with the same sense of wonder.

3. The Dolphin Experience: Capturing Movement & Emotion

The dolphins at Coral World are a highlight and one of the most exciting subjects to photograph. They’re fast, expressive, and full of personality, which made for some of my favorite shots of the day.

While the sea turtles, observatory, and dolphins were the main highlights, there were plenty of other fun photography moments around the park:

• Iguanas Sunbathing – I got a great portrait shot using 5x zoom to capture the details of their scaly skin while they were lounging in the sun.
• Pools – It’s incredible seeing marine life up close, and the iPhone’s macro mode made it easy to capture tiny details.
• Coastal Views – The boardwalks around the park offer stunning ocean backdrops. A great place for a quick family portrait with Portrait Mode (1x).

Why an iPhone Was the Best Choice for This Activity

Going to Coral World with small children meant moving quickly, and focusing on enjoying the moment—not the camera. The iPhone 15 Pro Max delivered stunning images with minimal effort, allowing me to document both the magical marine life.

Of course, I wished I had my Sony for the dolphins—who wouldn’t? But realistically, would I have actually used it while chasing toddlers? Probably not. Plus, it’s always a good idea to check a venue’s photography policy before you go. Since I only planned to use my iPhone, I didn’t look into Coral World’s rules ahead of time.

For parents, casual photographers, and even professionals looking to travel light, the iPhone proved itself as a powerful photography tool, especially with Lightroom edits.
