St. Thomas, with its vibrant colors, dramatic landscapes, and crystal-clear waters, offers endless photography opportunities—but I didn’t want to lug around a massive gear bag on a family vacation.

Below I’ll break down the minimal yet powerful camera setup I brought to capture the island’s beauty, why I chose each piece, and how I balanced versatility with portability.

The Camera Bodies: Balancing Power & Flexibility

📷 Sony A7R V – My Detail Powerhouse

I brought the Sony A7R V for landscape photography, portraits, and high-resolution detail shots. With its 61MP sensor, I knew I could crop in when needed without losing quality—a huge plus for travel photography. The dynamic range helped me preserve highlights in bright beach scenes while keeping shadow details in lush island shots.

📷 Sony A7 IV – My All-Around Workhorse

The Sony A7 IV is my go-to for versatility. Its 33MP sensor delivers excellent image quality while being more manageable in file size than the A7R V. I used this as my main camera for handheld shots, and fast-moving scenes where I didn’t need the extreme resolution of the A7R V.

Why two camera bodies?

Having two cameras meant I could keep two lenses mounted at all times, reducing the need for frequent lens changes—important when shooting in salty sea air or sandy conditions.

Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II – The Ultimate Landscape & Wide-Angle Lens

Perfect for capturing expansive seascapes, dramatic cliffs, and the tight interiors of colorful island buildings, this lens also excels at creating depth with beautiful bokeh. 

Its wide field of view makes it ideal for showcasing nearby islands, offering a sweeping perspective of the entire scenery. 

The f/2.8 aperture enhances low-light performance, making it perfect for early morning sunrises or sunset shots.

Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II – The Do-It-All Travel Lens

This lens was on my camera most of the time, giving me the flexibility to shoot landscapes, animals, and boats—whether yachts, sailboats, or catamarans—without needing to swap lenses. The sharpness and fast autofocus made it a perfect companion for capturing the island’s ever-changing light.

Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM – The Secret Weapon for Compression & Portraits

Though not typically considered a travel lens, the 135mm f/1.8 GM is my favorite for subject isolation and storytelling. It’s perfect for capturing candid moments or portraits of animals, creating a beautiful background blur that enhances the mood without distractions. 

The compression effect also makes distant landscapes appear more dramatic, making it a great choice for framing a subject against the stunning Caribbean blues.

GoPro Hero 9: Adventure & Underwater Shots

A must-have for snorkeling adventures, the GoPro Hero 9 let me capture vibrant underwater scenes without the risk of losing my iPhone in the ocean. 

Its hyper-smooth stabilization was perfect for filming while swimming, making it easy to document the beauty of the Caribbean without worrying about damaging my main cameras.

iPhone 15 Pro Max: The Everyday Travel Companion

Even with my pro camera gear, I always rely heavily on my iPhone 15 Pro Max for:

• Quick snapshots & behind-the-scenes moments
• 4K video
• Night mode & computational photography for tricky lighting
• Aerial-style perspectives with its ultra-wide lens

Sometimes, the best camera is the one in your pocket, and the iPhone delivers stunning shots when I don’t want to carry my full setup or just enjoy being present with my family.

Why This Photography Gear Worked for St. Thomas

• Versatility – I covered ultra-wide to telephoto without overpacking.
• Weather-friendly – GoPro and iPhone handled sand, salt, and water, plus my Sony cameras are weather resistant.

Would I change anything? Since this wasn’t a photography-focused trip, I left my drone behind—but I did miss it for capturing aerial shots of the islands and boats. That said, the memories made were well worth traveling light this time! Otherwise, this setup was perfect.
